Lunchtime Talk: Folktales, VR, Oops!

In this Lunchtime Talk, Tosin Olufon shares the messy, joyful and sometimes ridiculous process of turning a folktale into an interactive experience. Tosin Olufon is an immersive artist and researcher in Virtual reality (VR) and animated storytelling. Her practice explores how African oral storytelling traditions, particularly Yoruba folktales, can be preserved, reimagined and experienced through Virtual Reality and animated forms. In this talk, Tosin shares the messy, joyful and sometimes ridiculous process of turning a folktale into an interactive experience. From character design, animation and motion capture to directing attention in VR, designing interaction and discovering that audiences rarely do what you expect them to do. She reflects on the creative and cultural challenges that emerge along the way, as well as the experiments, compromises, and happy accidents that help shape the work.
