Lunchtime Talk: "Just Enough" AI
Pervasive Media Studio · BS1
11 September 2026 – 11 September 2026
Workshop
In this talk, researcher Matt Dowse will present the ideas behind an upcoming project 'Just Enough' AI: Developing Demonstrators For Responsible, Appropriate Scale A.I. Within Planetary Boundaries. We live in a Sociodigital world - a world where society and digital technology are increasingly bound together. This presents us with an array of possible 'sociodigital futures' across different areas of life and work. While we can't predict 'the' future, how we think about, imagine and act upon possible futures in the present matters a great deal. In this talk, Matt will present the ideas behind their upcoming project in collaboration with Friends of the Earth 'Just Enough' AI: Developing Demonstrators For Responsible, Appropriate Scale A.I. Within Planetary Boundaries. He will share some early thoughts, and hold a Q and A, plus discussion about how we navigate the future(s) that AI might bring about. Matt Dowse is a researcher at the Centre for Sociodigital Futures at the University of Bristol. Joining Matt to answer questions will be Mary Stevens, the Experiments Co-Lead at Friends of the Earth. Together, they have received ESRC Impact funding to develop a project that will share ideas, connect people who share these concerns, promote conversations, and develop resources that tackle the possibility of responsible and appropriate scale AI within Planetary Boundaries.
