ExperiMental: A Comedic Theatre Project by Juliette Burton
Is it crazy to be sane? Award-winning performer Juliette Burton is a 'Fringe Favourite' (The Guardian), a 'Fringe Legend' (FringeReview) and has spent most of her life on the fringes… Can those on the edge see the big picture most clearly? After years of being told she was too much, too sensitive, too weird, too emotional, too ill or simply too different, Juliette's asking: who gets to decide what's normal anyway? Developed over three years with contributions from mental health service users, survivors of domestic abuse, people with lived experience of homelessness, disabled communities, LGBT communities, immigrant communities and other marginalised groups, ExperiMental is a thought-provoking, visually striking comedic theatre piece about belonging, exclusion and the ever-expanding circle of acceptance. Blending theatre, dance, comedy, storytelling, community created artwork, extraordinary costumes developed through workshops with participants from marginalised groups across the country, theatrical transformation and, most alluring to a nerd like Juliette, data-driven research, Juliette asks what happens when we stop trying to fit in and start reimagining the rules. History is full of people who were called 'crazy' - until they weren't. Supported by Arts Council England.
