Don Giovanni
Opera Project and Tobacco Factory Theatres complete Mozart and Da Ponte's trilogy with their thrilling masterpiece, Don Giovanni. Repent your sins. Your hour of doom is near. Within minutes of the opera opening, the Don is involved in a duel with the Commendatore, whose daughter Anna he has abducted. The Commendatore is killed and the tone is set for a series of brutal escapades, culminating in a graveyard where Giovanni invites the statue of the Commendatore to dinner. Unbelievably for the Don, the statue accepts and the opera reaches its climax in the famous supper scene during which Giovanni is dragged to hell. This is the story of a man entirely driven by desire for sexual conquest, a desire that not only controls his own life but those around him. This tale of seduction, murder and divine retribution is nevertheless richly imbued with darkly comic episodes, provided by the fast and furious interplay between Giovanni and his servant Leporello, one of opera's most memorable creations. A spectacular line-up of singers includes Sam Pantcheff (last season's Guglielmo) as the Don himself, the fabulous Welsh bass Emyr Wyn Jones as the long-suffering Leporello, and a return for Melissa Gregory (last season's Dorabella) as Giovanni's nemesis, the passionate Donna Elvira. Jonathan Lyness conducts another of his superb orchestral arrangements and Richard Studer, who made his professional debut with this magnificent opera at Bristol's Old Vic in 1994, returns as director/designer. Book now and keep your wits about you; there's a lot to pack in!
