A basis in folk and traditional idioms informs three wildly diverse acts on the stage of Bristol's legendary Thunderbolt. Opening our night at 8pm is acoustic trio Acts of Resistance presenting an avant-folk punk-opera about 1000 years of protest in England. Blending the fire-lighting punk poetry of anarcho original Steve Lake (Zounds) with the soaring, haunting vocalscape of Aether Valentine and the free-jazz fury of Carl Philip Louis on Mandola, the spirit of Rebel England is summoned through song, story and improvisation. They're followed at 9 by the meandering psychedelia of local faves, Folketronic. Moody, atmospheric layers dressed with folk-forward vocals and 60s psychedelia, Folketronic weave textures and genres with a sound that nods back to the old-school while remaining a vibrant and new expression of their Bristol home city. Rounding out the night at 10 is internationally-sourced rock & roll juggernaut The Spiritus Mundi. With veteran members of the Canadian psych and Swedish indie rock scenes, in tandem with some stellar local musicians, this five-piece group filters blues, country and folk idioms through a lens of 90's British psychedelia and vintage rock and roll to create a sound undefinably distinct but instantly memorable.
