Making Anarchism Mainstream Again Talk
After the Cafe - at 7pm in the Events Room there'll be a talk and discussion with Tony from the Rebel City London collective. The individuals from a range of London groups that make up the Rebel City collective, have tried the full range of standard outreach tactics to people - street stalls, free newsletters, flyposting, billboards, meetings, gigs & socials, film nights and other events, and of course actions. When they came up with the idea of holding talks about anarchism with youth in schools & colleges, most people just…laughed. Impossible! It was a slow burner, but they've now run dozens of such talks after being invited into places. From those talks came the idea of a book written in a style and language that would appeal to youth. Early drafts were road-tested on youth, with their comments and criticisms turned into edits. Then the youth proofread the book. Thousands of copies have been distro'd or downloaded. You can read the book here - For a future made by us all. There's a Deaf version, and also translations into Kurdish, Arabic and Persian. More recently they've also taken to making short films of a person talking about anarchism, and posting them up on TikTok and FB, in a small attempt to get anarchist voices heard. Now they've got more ambitious, forming ANTS, and putting together a team of confident anarchist speakers - to go out into the media world and speak about anarchism, or an anarchist perspective on a particular issue. Impossible you might say? Well we've heard that word before! Come and join the discussion and help find new and better ways to spread the word about anarchism now!
